The Moving Words Grant is a one-off grant that will be given to an individual artist or a company to be spent in supporting the creation of live work that uses both movement and text. The application will be simple and two pages long, with no support material required and a cut-off date of October 1, 2012. Megan Finlay is a director and choreographer who has lived and worked in Sydney, London and San Francisco. She is the artistic director of Rapid Descent Physical performance company, with whom she creates work that combines theater with live music and movement.

THURSDAY ASSEMBLY

We offer a 3-month artist-in-residence program with developed work feeding Foundry Nights productions (in addition to independent acts).

What the Foundry AIR program offers:

• Rehearsal space with designated time slots for performers
• Designated creation area and time slots for installation/visual artists
• Flexible space (accommodates construction of set/installation pieces)
• Opportunity to perform or showcase work in front of a live audience Production and promotion of event
• Organizational support (working with artists to set rehearsal times, set creative goals, progress check-ins, be ready for Foundry Nights)
• Creative support (sound-boarding and feedback, working with a creative director/collaborator if desired)
• Collaboration opportunities with other artists through our Matchmaker program
• Performance recording—all residents are offered video documentation of their work at Foundry Nights, produced by CyperusMedia
• High tolerance for risk/experimentation

What the Foundry AIR program does NOT offer:

• The program does not provide funding. This is an opportunity for artists to be provided with creative, organizational, production, promotion, creative, materials, performance and documentation support—in the hopes of minimizing the financial barriers of developing and displaying work by offering these “in-kind” resources.
• Rehearsal or production space for artists not interested in developing or contributing work for Foundry Nights. For this, venue rental is offered.

The MilkBar at The Sunshine Biscuit Factory in East Oakland is an artist curated salon series, established in 2004 as an environment for the intersection of innovative, contemporary and experimental dance, music,theater and film.  The MilkBar’s co curators are: Mary Armentrout, Merlin Coleman and Ian Winters. Their shaOrange curatorial asthetic produces The MilkBar salons in their vibrant, intimate forty seat venue. The Milkbar actively supports site-specific work in and around the Sunshine Biscuit Factory’s vast industrial complex.

• a gorgeous light filled industrial room w/ floor to ceiling windows

• left alone / 24 hour workspace

• located in the inimitable sunshine biscuit factory complex (many acres  of post-industrial goodness)
• 2 optional chances to share ideas / work in progress:
• a studio showing of work in progress to others in the project space program sometime during your month
• an installation / studio exhibition at the end of your month or in the next milkbar salon

More about the projects room:

The MilkBar Projects Room is our new addition as of 2011. It’s a lovely totally seperate work room about 14’ x 40’ that shares a common wall with our main studio space. We use it for special projectsthat need periods of time to build / assemble / play.

In between our own projects we’ve begun an informal series of resident artists coming and working in the project room for a month. In 2011 we had some great site-specific projects including:

• composer heather frasch and afrooz family
• the labor and accident project of blindsight / paige starling sorvillo (a joint project with subterranean art house)
• david coll, ricardo rivera and Kim Anno
• mary armentrout’s the woman invisible project
• ian winters memory table project

In Three Skins, choreographer Jean-Sébastien Lourdais explores the limits of his choreographic vocabulary, continually challenging the bodies of Montréal Danse performers Annik Hamel, Rachel Harris and Frédéric Marier, testing their physical abilities and boundaries. The trio leads the audience into an experience in which the body reveals itself through every impulse, every muscle and organ. The process of physical awakening gives the bodies an unsuspected intensity.

Driven by the musical and physical performance of Ludovic Gayer, the performers play with attraction as well as repulsion in search of release and exultation. Outside comfort and bearings, beyond imagination and primitive instinct, Three Skins is a playfully disturbing kinesthetic event.

The Santa Cruz Fringe Festival is a brand new performing arts festival that will take place on July 13-22, 2012. The Festival will bring approximately 175 performances by about 35 different acts to several downtown venues over the 10-day period.

Tonight I attended a dance showing in an Oakland home. Navigating from room to room with a good crowd was totally rad. Post-performance, we socialized and learned more about the home’s history.  It was fun to discover beautiful details in the space.
